While this series has already passed the two year mark since its release on Netflix, it still haunts horror and thriller fans to this day. The Haunting of Hill House, a horror series created by Mark Flanagan and based off the 1959 novel of the same name, follows the Crain family and the unfortunate circumstances they find themselves in upon moving into Hill House, a spacious manor in rural Massachusetts. And upon moving in to the long-abandoned home in 1992, the family begins experiencing many terrifying, paranormal events.
The story, without giving too much away, is of the events following the Crain family’s move to Hill House which the family took on as an easy flip. Hugh Crain, the father of the family, is an excellent handyman, and has spent his life repairing and flipping houses along with his wife, Olivia, who designs the homes. The family is comprised of Hugh, Olivia and their sons and daughters, Steven, Shirley, Theodora and the twins, Luke and Eleanor.
The show moves from present day to flashbacks from when the family was living in the house in their youth, but starts with Steven, the oldest, who as an adult has become a very successful author and is most famous for his book based off of the events that took place when he was a child at Hill House. Steven, however, does not actually believe anything that happened and chalks it all up to mental illness. The rest of his family does not share his beliefs, as much as they might like to believe he is right.
Shirley, the second-born, is a funeral home owner and has spent her life perfecting her embalming skills. The series kicks off with Steven receiving a strange voicemail from his younger sister, Eleanor, more often known as Nellie. The next day, Shirley finds herself dressing her sister’s dead body, after she had made the decision to return to the long-abandoned Hill House, which turned out to be the last decision she would make.
Without spoiling too much more of this amazingly produced show, the next few episodes are spent showing past events and what each family member was doing up until the moment of Nellie’s death. Once the family has gathered for the funeral, the hauntings from their childhood home begin to truly become real to each and every one of them.
Overall, I can't recommend this series enough. It is a very solid choice for any horror/thriller fans, and even for those who just want to give themselves a scare or two for fun. The actors all did an amazing job and they worked well with the actors portraying their younger selves. Each episode brings out the deepest emotions from each and every character, as you see their struggle and their pain manifest itself in their own individual ways. If you have Netflix, this is a great option for your next binge series.
But don’t blink, you might miss something.
