Erin's Style File: White and Wood

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

If you’re interested in all things stylish – I'm talkin' home decor, plants and fashion – you’ve come to the right place. In that case, you must have style, or maybe you’re looking for some? Either way, I hope that I can give you some inspiration.

By no means do I have qualifications that make me the best source for DIY inspiration, home décor how-to's, fashion inspiration or green thumb tips (but I sure can effectively teach an English class of 12 and 13 year olds). However, what I do have is a passion for all of these things. My niche is to look good and feel good whether that be at home, at work or while running errands and I hope I can pass some of that on to you.

Let’s get started! I hummed and hawed about what I wanted this first post to be about, and after some thought, I figured why not start with the basics to lay the foundation.

What's your goal when styling/decorating your home and when you get dressed every morning? What do you already own that you love? What makes you feel like the best version of yourself?

Personally, I love a good modern and airy style for my home. Is this a real description? No idea, but just go with it. By this I mean that my home is a welcoming space to be, for me and (hopefully) for guests. It's mostly white and beige with wicker and wood accents. I loved simple (not to be mistaken with 'boring') decor even before I lived on my own and could decorate as I wished. I grew up in a house with mostly brown-toned surroundings, so this was normal to me when I moved out. Therefore, my decor choices are purposeful, cohesive together and minimal (mostly, if I can resist the temptation of HomeSense). This neutral palette that I have always loved also allows the opportunity to add a bit of color.

The color that I’ve used in the living room to strive for the airy and light feeling I enjoy, is blue. It’s not too feminine (you’re welcome, Jhett), but it still looks put together and it’s a color that’s appropriate for all seasons. Fun fact: I HATE decorating for any season or holiday other than Christmas. More about that another time. Anyways, the color in the bedrooms and bathroom – purple. This color choice was a no brainer, it’s my favourite since I was a kid - purple comforter, purple walls, purple purple purple. This color also gives an illusion of royalty, especially in the spare room, and goes nicely with those beige and brown tones that I mentioned earlier.

White and wood.

See? Effortless. I love this shelf because its beautiful and functional, and I love the purple glass vase because of its geometric shape.

When I get dressed, I want to feel confident. For me, I feel my best when I’m comfortable, when I genuinely love what I’m wearing and when I get to (successfully) experiment with a new garment or trend. Typically, confidence, for me, is achieved by wearing neutrals, layering (hello, winter!) and accessorizing. Necklaces. Watches. Fun earrings. I'm in. Rotating and sustainably donating or selling clothing that does not serve these goals of mine is how I ensure that I continuously love what I wear while making sure I wear what I own in different ways. Pinterest has fuelled many of these experiments.

If you’re a little unsure about what your goal is when decorating and dressing yourself and your home, find items that you already own and love. That can guide you into a direction that cultivates a more consistent vibe in every aspect of your life that needs a bit more style.

Stay tuned for next week when I dive more into these ideas!
